Cord vs Cordless Vacuum Cleaners

Ok, yes we are aware of the following facts:

1) You can trip over an electric cord on your vacuum.
2) You don't have to uncoil or recoil a cordless vacuum.
3) Cords can get in your way while operating a vacuum.
4) Cords add a modest amount of weight to a vacuum.
5) Cordless vacuums cost up to 7 times as much to operate as a corded vacuum.

Please consider these thoughts regarding the above.

#1 If you are elderly clearly this is certainly a legitimate reason to own a cordless machine.

#2 Uncoiling and recoiling a cord each require 60 seconds (maybe less) and burn 4 calories. I doubt you really can't physically handle the cord.

#3 Is this really a big hassle in life? I doubt it. If it is buy a cordless.

#4 See #3 above same thinking.

#5 OK.... LISTEN UP!!!!! The average rechargeable battery in a cordless vacuum cleaner lasts 18-36 months and costs $100-$300 to replace! So you are going to spend a fortune keeping that machine running BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO REPLACE THE BATTERY MULTIPLE TIMES. Corded machines cost about about 15 cents worth of electricity for each use compared to $1000's on cordless batteries over the life of the vacuum. If you want convenience bad enough to spend $1000s of dollars over the life of your vacuum that you don't need to spend.....I personally think you have more money than brains!

Cordless vacuums are a terrible value for your money! Furthermore cordless vacuums easily require much more repair because they often don't use a motor to drive the brush head resulting in frequent failure to operate! Many cordless models use air flow to turn the brush head, once the air flow weakens the machine stops working.

Many times the contact points between the battery and the motor fail for a variety of reasons and 99% of the time these contacts are non-repairable. Corded vacuum cleaners send the electricity to the motor by copper wire and have none of the problems with contacts that cordless vacuums have. Plus it takes a minimal effort to rewire a corded machine.

Please follow this example: Vacuum used weekly for 30 years
Average battery life 5 years. (A little high)
So you will use that machine 1500 times over its life
1500 times 15 cents = $225 of electricity for the corded vacuum.
1500 times 15 cents = $225 of electricity for the cordless vacuum.
PLUS 5 additional batteries in the cordless machine over 30 years. (one battery comes with the machine) Cost per battery $220 give or take. $1100 plus $225 equals $1325 cost to operate the cordless vs $225 to operate the corded machine. Obviously this example is not true for each of the thousands of different vacuum cleaners available today. But I have based my example on industry experience.

There are some cordless vacuums that are worth the purchase price. As battery technology improves rechargeable batteries should be less problematic in the future. One final thought on cordless vacuum cleaners, IF THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT OFFER TO SELL YOU THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT BATTERY AS A REPLACEMENT RUN AWAY QUICKLY!! Many non-original batteries pose a fire risk because they don't meet the manufacturers original electrical requirements. Yes they look identical in terms of shape and color but they don't provide the same electrical results inside the machine.
